Brief
Retrofit Skills Centre needed a way to make an invisible career sector visible. With over 635,000 homes requiring retrofit in South London alone, the underlying trades – insulation, roofing, plumbing, electrical, ventilation, etc. represented a genuine growth industry, but one with little public awareness about the qualifications, pathways or earning potential. The brief called for an interactive house - a single visual illustration where clicking on a part of the home would surface the career opportunities and qualifications required for it.
Client
Retrofit Skills Centre, South London Partnership
Duration
1 month
Interaction and UX
The house was built to support two entry points, matching the brief: users could click on an area of the house and see the relevant career appear, or search on the website for a specific role and see the corresponding information for that role. Role groupings and categorisations such as pairing ventilation specialists with draught-proofing - were defined by the client's existing categorisation of trades; the design work ensured that these pairings were shown clearly as a single coherent panel on screen.
Outcome
The finished interactive house is live at retrofitskillscentre.wixstudio.com, giving Retrofit Skills Centre a single, explorable entry point into ten retrofit career categories - turning a dense set of qualifications and salary data into something a prospective candidate can browse in minutes.
